Spanners and wrenches are similar in overall function but different, and they come in many shapes and sizes, and are designed for specific jobs. It is necessary to use the correct tool, whether a spanner or wrench, for the given task, otherwise hardware could be damaged. You could ruin the flats of the nut, bolt or fastener if you try to use an improperly fitting tool. Spanners may be fixed or adjustable, whereas wrenches can always be adjusted. For both types of tools, quality construction is a must. Those made from chrome vanadium or carbon-forged steel are the best, for the metal is durable and designed to provide more than enough torque for most common uses. The most common type of spanner is the open-ended variety. Consisting of a shaft with working heads on one or both ends, they are versatile tools. Double-ended spanners make the most sense, for you get two different sizes with one tool. Each head is angled about 15 degrees off the shaft, letting you reach multiple flat edges of a nut. This is especially useful while working in cramped spaces.

With enclosed heads that feature either 6 or 12 inner points, ring spanners are another type. More versatile are 12-point spanners, for they can fasten onto both hexagonal and square bolts or nuts. However, they are more prone to rounding a hex nut, while 6-point spanners are designed to fit hex nuts perfectly. You get more leverage with 6-point tools, but the size of the spanner and the size of nut must match. Stronger than the open-ended type, ring spanners can be harder to fit around a fastener. Among the other types available are bulldog, box, tap, offset ring, split ring and adjustable spanners.

Wrenches are similar to spanners, but they are the tools of choice when turning, tightening or loosening pipe. Unlike adjustable spanners, a pipe wrench has serrated jaws to get a better grip on a pipe. Mole, footprint, strap and Stilson wrenches are some of the other types. They are designed to provide a varying amount of pressure or fit pipes of different diameter. Another type of wrench is called a torque wrench, and its purpose is to tighten fasteners to very precise specs. Torque wrenches are most commonly used by mechanics. Spanners and wrenches are each suited to a particular task according to their size, shape and how much precision tightening is necessary.
