Bdc Reticle

Which is the better tactical rifle for the novice shooter?

I want to buy a “tactical” rifle for long range target shooting. I am on a budget, and I have limited my choices to 1)Winchester Model 70 Stealth II 2) Savage 12VF 3) Remington Model 700 VSF. What is generally considered to be the best out of the box rifle of the three.

Also, what is a good scope in the $200 – $400 range? I was thinking of the Nikon scope with the BDC reticle.

I am a former military tactical shooter.

Novice shooters should learn on a standard rifle – they do not posess the skills or knowlege to use a precision match rifle to it’s full capability. After 5 years of practice and you have finally become a decent shot – your first rifle will be all ‘shot out’ and messed up. It is better to buy a $400-$500 rifle now and learn on it – later on when you better get a better rifle and use this one as a spare.

If you do not – then 5 years from now when you are a good shot, this rifle is gonna be a hunk of junk – and you will never get better. That, and you won’t have a spare with any decent shooting dope.

You need to find a decent long range competition or military shooter to show you the ropes. You can figure things out in the begining by yourself, but, eventually you will reach a plateau where you are not getting any better and spinning your wheels.

Ask yourself if you currently have unlimited access to a 600 yard range? If not – and you are stuck with a 100- 300 yard reduced domestic range – your score would be the same – standard rifle or $6,000 match rifle. Only a master or olympic class shooter would be able to do any difference with a match rifle in short distances.

This will help.
