Universal Bore-sighters; Are they any good ?

To zero the scope, currently, I’m using old ways of looking through the barrel and adjusting scope. I’m wondering if boresighter like this http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/guide-gear-universal-laser-boresighter-kit.aspx?a=733405 can be of any help ? I read mixed reviews about these types of Boresights. What is your personal experience ?

@GayTeacher : Currently, I do the same thing but the problem starts when I use semi-automatics. I hate to disassemble them every-time, you put the scope or red dot on.

They have done me some good. I have one from Bushnell, it works good enough to get the bullet to print on the bullseye target.

But not good enough to mark the 10 Ring on the first few shots.

What I normally do is get the darn thing sighted with the Bore Sighter, as close as possible.

Take the rifle to the range, aim at the X on the 10 Ring and pop it once. I also normally have the rifle sand-bagged. Then adjust the scope from there.

One thing I did learn.

After you mount your scope. Turn the each scope knob in one direction until it stops. Then count the turns in the opposite direction until it stops again. Divide that number by 2. Then turn the knobs that many number of turns. This sets the X and Y axis as close to “0″ as possible.

Align the Bore Sighter, and adjust accordingly.

Then take the rifle to the range and make your final adjustments.

Now as for Red-Dots, they are simply not as accurate as a scope with a true reticle. Its just a fact for that type of scope. This in particular for 10/22′s. I own 2 of them and love them dearly for their plinking ability. But for my long range work for the squirrel population in my friend’s property in Del Norte County, that is billed out to my Remington 700 in .223 Remington, (5.56 NATO).

Eric is correct. The Bore Sighter is not a precision tool. One thing that can help are barrel lasers. I have used these before. Basically its an cartridge with a laser inside it that shines down your barrel onto a “target” surface. I have used these in conjunction with the Bore Sighter, but I still use the above method for the fine tuning. The only gripe I have with the barrel laser is I cannot vouch for the precision which they are assembled. Most of them I have used have been assembled rather poorly. I hope that helps too.
