What scope to put on my Winchester Model 70 .308?
Hi. I was given this Winchester Model 70 .308 rifle as a gift and I know nothing about it. I know the history of the Model 70 and everything like that but I don’t know the year it was made or the price it may cost. It has a Weaver scope on it and I want to get rid of it. I went to the range a few days ago and the scope barely helped. (I tested rounds with scope and without) I am looking to spend $100-$200 on a decent scope and I’ve heard to go with Nikon Prostaff, Bushnell Legend, and a few others like Simmons, Sight Tech, Barksa and Alpine. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a lot
Paul
P.S. the Nikon Prostaff 3×9 40mm with BDC reticle goes for $159 and the Bushnell Legend of the same magnification goes for $139
The Nikon Prostaff is a very good scope for the .308. I had one on my Remington Model 742 .30-06, til I sold the rifle. I then mounted the same scope on my Savage Model 12FLV .22-250. I gave the scope back to my cousin and his Father in-law has it on his Remington .30-06. When I had it, it held zero nicely on both rifles that it was on. My cousin only paid $150 for the same one you mentioned.
I would also look at the Leupold VX-1,VX-2 and Rifleman… All in the 3-9x40mm. Very nice scopes. Leupold scopes have life time warranties. I now have a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40mm mounted on my .22-250, hoping to upgrade later to a VX-3. I had a Winchester Model 70 7mm with a Leupold VX-1 mounted. Cousin has a VX-2 mounted on his Ruger .204. What I like about Leupold scopes is, that they have awesome glass clarity and eye relief. Nikon’s glass is good, but take a look at a Nikon and a Leupold together and you’ll understand what I mean. I paid $199 for the Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40mm at Cabela’s. The Leupold VX-1 cost about $200-$219. The Leupold VX-2 will cost more, but very much worth the money, at $300. I would shop around though, Cabela’s tends to be more expensive. I was desperate for a better scope, then the Center-Point scope I had on my .22-250.
I’m not very familiar with scopes like Sight Tech or Alpine. So I can’t offer you my input on those scopes. I’ve heard nothing but bad reviews on the Barska scopes, so I would avoid those. Both Bushnell and Simmons scopes are decent scopes. A cousin has a Simmons mounted on his Remington Model 742 .308, it’s done him well. A friend has a Bushnell Dusk to Dawn scope on his Remington 700 .220 Swift. It too has done him well.
Whatever you do. Don’t cut corners buying a scope for your rifle. You truly do get what you pay for.
