Should British Petroleum pay for the disaster?
With the same resentment that Union Carbide paid for Bhopal (the Worlds worst industrial accident) when 3800 people died at their leaking, derelict, plant?
Or America is saying one rule for the limeys and another for Uncle Sam?
The way corporate law is set up in the US, corporations aren’t responsible for the damage they do or even the crimes they commit. This is probably true throughout the ‘civilized’ world. It is possible for a corporation to commit a crime that destroys peoples’ lives or even leaves a wake of innocent dead in its path, and for no individual human beings in the corporation to be held responsible. In the US, corporate crime costs us more than street crime, and it’s even arguable that it kills more people.
If it was me, I’d make BP pay for every penny of the damage, at least until the company goes into bankruptcy and is taken over and sold off piece by piece. And then I would go after the personal fortunes of the president and board of directors. But I don’t rule the world. Unfortunately. 8^<
BP will skate on this. They will spend a token billion dollars, which sounds like a lot but isn't to a company that makes dozens of billions a year. And that's why this kind of thing happens. Just like the managers of our failed banks, BP's top execs will probably even get their big bonuses this year.
