Coated Binoculars

Coated Binoculars
What does 10×42 mean on binoculars?

On binoculars, What does…
- 10×42 mean ?
- Field 7.2 degrees ?
- green coated ?

Whats a standard pair and would you say these ones are good for looking at stars?? Thanks :)

The 10 indicates the magnification of the binoculars. The 42 indicates e diameter of the lens in millimeters. Just as a note, it is better to have a larger diameter than a larger magnification. If you magnify a blurry image, you just get a large blurry image. The larger the diameter of the lens, the clearer the image. 10×42 is a good pair of binoculars.

The field view just tells you what size of they sky you see when looking through the binoculars. For comparison, the moon is half a degree across. So with those binoculars of 7.2 degrees would fit about 15 full moons in it’s image. That is a fairly large field of view.

The green coating is just coating on the lens that helps to collect light and stop it from being absorbed by other things. It doesn’t matter very much what the coating is because they all do the same thing. It only really matters if ther is a coating or not.

If these are specs of binoculars you are looking at, I would say thet are a good pair. They would be perfectly good for observing astronomical objects.
