Dewalt DW745 Compact Table Saw

Within a tool industry where the term “portable” is now a blanket term for nearly anything not bolted into the floor, it is really refreshing to discover a different portable tablesaw which doesn’t make your back hurt just looking at it.

The revolutionary DW745 is simply a slimmed-down variation of Dewalt’s famous DW744. This saw comprises of the favorite rack-and-pinion fence, that is easy to alter, and offers an excellent hairline indicator for making zeroing in on exact measurements a piece of cake.

The actual big news, though, is in what Dewalt has changed. To start, this lightweight saw is shielded by a durable steel roll cage. In addition, at only 45 lb., it weighs approximately 20 lbs. lower than the DW744. The truth is, I found it easier than you think to carry in just one hand. Additionally, the rip capacity has been reduced from 24.5 in. to somewhat of a more modest 16 in., a size and weight trade-off I am a lot more than prepared to accept.

The rest of the features will be what you should expect to find on a good-quality tablesaw: straightforward depth and bevel adjustments, easy 2-wrench blade changes, common-size miter slots which work with aftermarket accessories, and a large power switch on the lower left front on the saw body where it is seen and easy to reach. Also, although it had been unreleased during the time I tested the saw, Dewalt currently offers a simple x-style foldable stand as an aftermarket accessory.

Being used, the saw possessed a good amount of power for any job I gave it. Shaping 1″ thick MDF step risers and 5/4 oak treads, ripping hardwood casing and 2x stock, and back-beveling the bottom edge of hundreds of feet of baseboard were all straightforward with a good blade mounted.

The saw only has a couple of weak points. Its failure to run a dado blade could be a deal breaker for some individuals. But I was more let down to discover that the DW745 comes with a low-grade, disposable blade which performs poorly and leaves behind yellow paint on almost everything it cuts. I’d hoped for much better for a saw promoted to trim carpenters, particularly due to the fact I am a fan of Dewalt’s higher-quality blades. Nevertheless, these minor weak points aren’t enough to outweigh the excellent features of this tool.
