Edition Reloading

Can you use an XP Media Edition product key for windows XP Home?

I have a friend that has a new laptop that just crashed due to a virus? or maybe his own meddling where he shouldn’t have. Basically it’s now missing files (primarily the ntldr file) and needs to have windows reloaded. I only have a copy of xp home edition…but the laptop came with media edition. Can that at least get me to the repair windows utility if not an install?

It will install windows Xp home and it will leave the files that have been previously saved on the computer.
