Why did the advancing Red Army revenge themselves on Nazi Germany by raping German women in 1945?

The German army invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 and destroyed their buildings and industrial facilities and massacred civilians.
But later the Red Army were said to have revenged themselves by raping German women in their occupied eastern Germany, not killing civilians.
Do you know why?

Another thing is involved… Soviet shock troops at the time were OFTEN from penal battalions (military prisoners), so they weren’t exactly law abiding guys.

Rape and Plunder had gone along with war since the earliest history, and has only become immoral or illegal since the late 19th Century.
