Gabrielle Giffords’ Condition Improving After Shooting

Gabrielle Giffords miraculously survived the terrible Tucson, Arizona shooting. Her condition has been steadily improving since then. She responds to commands and makes articulate movements, but still is on a ventilator for the time being. Her doctors are confident that she will survive, but the extent of the damage remains to be seen. There is no doubt these medical bills are likely to add up to more than a personal loan could cover..

Gabrielle Giffords steadily improving from near fatal wound

The Tucson, Arizona shooting was deadly for many including congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was shot within the head by Jared Loughner. The Los Angeles Times reports that she is showing signs of improvement though. Giffords is getting the sedation to be taken away right now slowly. The recovery requires this. Any lung infections will be countered by a ventilator that she continues to be on. Giffords was making “spontaneous movements,” like feeling her wounds and adjusting her hospital gown, as outlined by Dr. Peter Rhee, head of trauma at University Medical Center in Tucson, where Giffords is currently located. Rhee then made it clear that there will be more details within the next few days as Giffords is in an unpredictable state of recovery still.

Different answers when asking about survival v recovery

It isn’t currently known what the damage is that the bullet did to Giffords, although doctors feel she will survive. CBS reports that Dr. Rhee said it is “101 percent guaranteed” that she will survive and “she will not die. She does not have that permission from me.” The damage that the bullet from the Glock 19 Loughner used caused isn’t known right now. The areas of the brain that controls the right side of the body’s movement and speech function is what was shot as the left hemisphere was shot all the way through causing brain damage.

Could Loughner get the death penalty?

The death penalty is a possibility for 22 year old Jared Loughner. He would have to be convicted of charges though. Six were killed and 14 wounded in the Tucson shooting. Loughner is being defended by Judy Clarke, a federal public defender. She’s done a good job of keeping defendants from getting the death penalty in the past. CNN reports that January 24 could be when the next hearing happens in Phoenix. Judge Larry Burns could be the judge on the case.
