AR 15 with pistol grip in California?

ok, i want to buy a 22 caliber AR-15, but what i want to know is if i can have a pistol grip and a detachable clip? (in California?) i know that the Ruger SR-22 has a pistol grip and a 10 round detachable clip so can i get the AR 15 in 22lr with a pistol grip and a detachable clip?

As far as I understand, the Ruger SR-22 is perfectly California legal. In fact, the Turners around here (a decently respectable chain of stores that wouldn’t be caught dead with contraband) has been selling them along with various other .22LR rifles with a pistol grip (S&W, GSG are all recent sales too).

The part of the law that is at issue here is California Penal Code 12276.1 (linked below for you). That’s the law that would normally prevent you from having a detachable magazine AND a pistol grip. However, CA PC 12276.1 only applies to a “semiautomatic, centerfire rifle” (and shotguns, pistols, etc), but does not cover semiautomatic RIMFIRE rifles. Which means most .22LR rifles are not covered.

Before you get too excited, you’re still limited to a 10 round magazine (there’s another law that covers magazines) and a certain few .22LR AR’s (mostly the older ones) may be covered by the ban. Of course keeping it the proper length and all other safety regulations also apply.

Now if you want an AR that loads with clips (not magazines), you can get those too! We call those the “top loaders” around here, where you have to load rounds into a fixed magazine using a stripper clip. Clips are not nearly as fun as a magazine.

EDIT- And as far as I know, you do NOT need a bullet button (BB). BB’s were only designed for centerfire rifles due to CA PC 12276.1. Since the SR-22 is a rimfire rifle, it doesn’t need a BB. You ought to be careful with using a BB anyhow as the CA DoJ hasn’t yet ruled that they’re legal (although they haven’t ruled that they’re illegal either). I figure, if you are looking for a centerfire semiautomatic rifle in California, skip the AR’s altogether. A rifle that takes a few more seconds to reload (when you needed that reload last week) just isn’t worth it.
