What is the difference between a red dot sight and a holographic sight?

What are the perks of red dot sights compared to holographic sights? Do holographic sights work similar to a regular scope in the sense that you can tell when you are looking at it properly?

Holographic sights are spendy but tough. I took a round through the end of my eoteck. it broke the lenses and all I could see was a sliver of red. It was enough to get round on target till I could get back and get it replaced. I don’t know that a “red dot” isn’t the same thing because you can get a holographic sight with a red dot. they also come with a ring which are (fast fast fast) for cqb.
