Savage Predator Hunter rifle in .223 Loading Question?
I have a Savage Predator Hunter rifle in .223. The rifle has a 20″ barel and 1:9 twist rate. I have been loading my own ammo for only a few months now and the only load that I have had luck with was 55g Nosler Bullets, 25g Benchmark Powder, BR4 Primers and OAL 2.299. If I use a bench rest I can shoot 0.50 MOA. I have bullets ranging from 50g Hornady, 52&53g Sierra Matchking, 55g Nosler and 60g Hornady V-Max. I just ordered 69g Nosler also. I thought for sure the 53g Sierra Matchking would shoot best but I can’t seem to find a decent load to bring in my groups. Do any of you have any suggestions and do you think I will have better luck with the 69g Nosler?
I have the same twist with a 24 inch bbl. Here are the loads that work for me.
52grain Amax with 26.3 of Varget
Sierra 50 grain Blitzking with 26.5 of Varget
Berger 52 grain varmint with 25.9 of Varget
Sierra 55 Blitzking with 28.5 of Varget
Berger 60 grain with 26.7 of Varget.
Berger 70 grain VLD with 24.2 of Varget
The seating depth on these range from 2.24 to 2.30 depending on the round. I have found that an O.L. of 2.30 will feed fine from tha savage magazine.
I have tried multiple powders and found that Varget works best for me in multiple bullet weights. These loads are after over 1000 rounds of testing for my rifle, so you may want to start a little lower and work up. Good luck.
