Hornady Seat

I am new to reloading and I just made my first bullet..YAY. But I am confused? I loaded a .224 Hornady 55 gr?

I loaded a .224 55 grain V-MAX Hornady. I seated the bullet and then went to crimp it with my factory crimp die. I ended up crimping the mouth of the brass and not the bullet. I also read that if the bullet isnt precrimped then it can’t be done? Can someone clearify why I can’t crimp this bullet and if maybe I just did it wrong or something.

Is right to say vmax just don’t crimp?
Overall length in the Lee’s book shows 2.260 but the surplus ammo I have is less @2.240 and my first bullet was 2.230 whats up with the variation ? could I have seated in too much causing the crimp to be at the mouth and not the bullet?

Short answer is you don’t need to crimp unless you are either feeding a autoloader (some actions may not need it my dad loaded for a 30-06 remington for years and never had to) , a heavy recoiling cartridge, or loading for a tube magazine fed rifle.
