Luxury Namibia

Namibia has certainly changed! Whereas it used to be quite difficult to unearth luxury in Namibia, there are now some stunning places to attract the more (or very) discerning traveller.
luxury Namibia A safari in Namibia can be created in many ways: perhaps flying from one remote, beautiful place to another or self driving and then staying in comfortable homely lodges or camping or – at the opposite end of the spectrum – using superb, luxurious, designer lodges where the scenery, guiding and accoutrements are all excellent. Leaders in creating superb holidays to this gorgeous country, African Explorations have three Namibia specialists who were born or worked extensively in the country.

Let’s concentrate on “Luxury Namibia”! Namibia has a tiny population in it’s vast expanses; here we will focus on just one property as example.

In the wild and remote far northwest lies Okahirongo Lodge in Kaokoland. Namibia safari holidays The majority of inhabitants in this area are Himba. Leading a peaceful nomadic existence raising goats and sheep, the women are statuesque and paint themselves in red ochre mud mixed with fat. They are very traditional in garb and lifestyle, visiting the scattered Himba settlements is encouraged.

This superb lodge lies in the most beautiful surroundings with fabulous views; dry river beds meander through swaying grasslands and red-gold sand dunes with a backdrop of purple and blue hillsides. Okahirongo is located in Purros Conservancy; a malaria-free region and one of the very few where the harsh environment supports desert dwelling elephant, rhino and occasional lion. A reason to visit the area is certainly the desert-adapted wildlife and sightings in the arid landscape should be treasured, not expected.

Perched on the side of a mountain and dominating an immense, almost endless, view of plains and dunes, the scenery can be admired from any of the eight luxury rooms. Surrounded by a traditional Himba boma, the rooms have both indoor and outdoor showers and are fully ensuite. The private sala in each room is perfect for afternoon siestas or in which to sleep out with the stars twinkling through the pole lattice above and illuminated by the full moon. holidays to NamibiaA chorus of the desert plains birds such as larks and pipits are one’s alarm call in the morning whilst the wake up calls of baboon, as they set about preparing to forage in the mountains, can be heard far off.
The terracotta colours of the rooms are in gorgeous contrast to the blonde grasses swaying in the breeze. Okahirongo also features an infinity swimming pool.

An unusual activity here is tracking desert adapted elephant and rhino; one may also see the rare desert lion in this superb untouched wilderness which can be explored on game/nature drives. Or one might hike along the Uarosib River, setting out on foot to explore the surrounding mountains whilst perhaps visiting a Himba village. A sophisticated desert experience as well as a photographer’s delight, Okahirongo is, put simply, superb.

Namibia also has number of other simply lovely and luxurious lodges in Etosha, the Namib Desert and the Caprivi Strip so it is now quite possible to assemble an interesting, intelligent and beautiful safari where no comfort is compromised!
