Two Combat Optics For The AR15
By the standard of the Western World, the US Army was late to adopt a magnifying optic on its infantry rifles and carbines. Alongside the latest version of the M68 CCO, the Aimpoint CompM4S, soldiers of the US Army are now issued a Trijicon ACOG. The M150 rifle combat optic is the US Army adaptation of the US Marine Corps AN/PVQ-31B (civilian designation TA31RCO-M4CP). Both sights can be traced back to the 4X32 Trijicon TA31F. The US Army did not follow the USMC in adopting barrel length specific versions instead opting for a ‘one size fits all – sorta’ configuration for the M4, M16A2, M16A4 and M249. Both the red chevron aiming mark and the 1-300 meter stadia are dual illuminated by fiber-optics and a tritium lamp. The stadia reticle permits accurate fire out to 800 meters. It has horizontal bars that are the width of a silhoutte target at each range and horizontal bars at 0.5 and 1 mil spacings to aid ranging. The TA51 twin thumbscrew flat-top mount can be detached allowing the sight to fit the carry handle of an M16A2. This sight is delivered to the Army with flip-up lens covers, an AGF1-ARD combined laser filter and anti reflection device.
In contrast the Leupold Prismatic Rifle Scope uses a conventional telescopic lens system to provide 1X magnification in a 30mm tube configuration. This sight gives you the benefits of a red dot and a scope in a very tough and compact package. It has a cross in a circle reticle to combine rapid aiming with precision. The battery powered illumination unit is detachable. The etched reticle is still visible if the 8 setting illumination unit is removed or fails. Leupold thoughtfully include three different height spacers with the Weaver/Picatinny thumbscrew mount. Alternatively you can use regular 30mm mounts. Other alternatives are the non-adjustable A.R.M.S. #22 throw-lever ring or the adjustable GG&G Leupold Prismatic rifle scope mount
