Are there any free photo editing programs that correct lens distortion?

Hi have a Canon Rebel XT and just purchased a the Tamron 17-50mm lens. On the wide end (17mm), the camera has a bit of distortion, and straight lines tend to warp a bit. Is there a free or very cheap photo editing system that can correct this? Thanks!

regardless of what program you use, correcting the distortion will be difficult. I’ve never heard of free software (or cheap one for that matter) that would have the capability. Sorry to say it to you again, but I’d be using any version of photoshop.

The distortion is normal because 17mm is on the fish-eye end of the spectrum. If you want to take straight lines in small proximity or odd angles with little room- you would have to look at a large format with Bellows and planes…. Lots of fun, but lots of expense.
