Mec Reloader
shotshell reloading help please?
I have a Mec 650 progressive 12 ga. reloader. The standard charge bar and bushing combo allows me to load only 11/8 ounce target loads, they work great from the 27 yard posts, but I feel they are overkill for the closer yardages.
I am looking for some information to load lighter shells to make my bags of shot stretch further and also to spare my shoulder of the recoil on short range targets.
If you have a specific recipe or anything please share. Thanks so much.
The simple and cheapest way to go is buy some charge bars, they don’t cost much;

Or you can weigh out 1 oz of shot on scales and make a shotdipper or buy a Lee adjustable shot dipper. To make your own shot dipper find an large empty felt marker, remove all the insides, pour in 1 oz of shot, mark at the top of the shot and cut off, attach to a handle, then scoop up a level amount of shot and weigh it. I have shot dippers made out of cut copper pipe, empty pistol and rifle brass for different powders and shot. Saves me the time of resetting up my machine for a few rounds.
I have two scales one for powder and one for shot or bullets. They are mighty handy and every reloader should have scales to weigh their loads now and then any way. You would be surprised at the varied powder weight loads you get from volume bushing, I have seen them vary up to 6 grs on the larger bushing. For example one bushing I have says 22.5 gr of Unique but it never reaches 22 grs but varies from 18 to 21 gr.
As for loads go with reloading manuals or the web sites of powder manufactures data, too dangerous to use loads given to you on the net in forums with out looking them up first.
