Mould Handles
What material can I make a mold out of so that it handles hot lead or tin?
I want to make a simple mold for a print. I am planning to make it out of lead or tin. What material can I use( a link to an online store with out would be splendid) that will withstand the hot temperature of molten lead or tin.
PS: I do realize that lead fumes are dangerous, and handling molten metal is dangerous.
what print?
I would guess just plaster would be cheapest. You would have to make sure the plaster is perfectly dry,e.g. by putting it into an oven at under 212F (or 100 C) for some time. How long would depend on the thickness of the mold.
For higher thermal stability you can mix silica sand into the plaster, but I would guess you don’t really need it.
There are some rubbers which will withstand the temperature (e.g. http://www.miniaturemolds.com/rtv.htm). Probably would give somewhat better detail. And you should be able to reuse the molds. The plaster would be for one-time use only.
Use lead-free pewter, less dangerous. Realize that handling lead can lead to lead poisoning too if you are not careful. So if it is something which will be handled frequently or come in contact with children, don’t use lead.
