Placement for a reflex sight on AK47 (WASR-10)?

I’ve noticed in quite a few photos that people put their red dots and reflex sights on the handguard rail instead of over top the dust cover. I have an open rail over the dust cover and hand guard, but the dust cover feels a little more natural for me. Is there any benefit to putting the red dot over the handguard as opposed to over the dust cover?

Carbines and rifles with optics mounted forward, over the hand guard, are frequently called “scout rifles”. The placement of the optics allows for a greater field of view. The shooter is able to see Left and right of the optics mount and is more aware of the surroundings.
