A State Of The Art Stock For The M-14
The M-14 rifle is now in the twilight of its career as a rifle with the US military but has experienced something or a resurgence of interest. The US Army had to re-learn the importance of having a hard-hitting, long ranged cartridge in a semiauto format and adopted the US Navy SEALs Mk 14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle at squad level in Afghanistan. The US Marines use the very similar M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle which replaced its Designated Marksman Rifle and is now being replaced by the Army's M110. This was largely facilitatied by the huge following of the M-1A with sports shooters who made it possible for a whole industry to build up around supplying enhancements that ultimately found their way onto the M-14.
M-14 stocks have improved dramatically since the 1950s walnut or birch issue unit. The original M14 stock was highly attractive, giving the rifle very smooth, clean lines, but it had been rendered obsolete by the German FG-42 15 years earlier. Prototypes had sported straight-line layout and pistol grips which has already become ubiqitous on other countries' military rifles but the traditonalists won out in the end. Combat optics never entered into the equation, but provision was made for mounting a grenade launcher sight on the left hand side of the receiver. Mounting scopes on the M-14 and M-1A has been so problematic that some target shooters have spot welded their bases to the receivers. The original stock made full-auto fire all but impossible to control and lead to a straight line stock on the short-lifed squad automatic weapon variant.
Troy overcame this problem by putting the butt of their rifle slightly above the line of the bore. This configuration totally revolutionizes the recoil characteristics of the rifle making very fast follow-up shots or auto fire eminiently practical. The Troy MCS is built to take any AR-15 stock or pistol grip and can be adapted to take folding stocks which are not possible with the AR-15. Troy also cracked the optics mounting problem. As with most modern rifles the Troy MCS sported a quad rail. However, putting the butt higher meant Troy could use a full lenght top rail running at the same level all the way to the back of the receiver. This makes co-witnessing iron sights like the Troy battle sights and Magpul Gen 2 MBUS easy as is mounting magnifiers and NV units. The Troy MCS is milled from two pieces of 6000 series Aluminium and takes about 20 minutes to fit with normal hand tools. When you factor in the weight of a normal receiver mounted scope base on an M-14 in a USGI stock there is no increase in weight for a rifle fitted with the Troy chassis system. Any barrel length or contour can be accommodated by the MCS. Glass bedding and the annoying need to rebuild every 1000 rounds or so is thus avoided.
