Optical Sights For Backwoods Hunting

There are profound advantages to using non magnifying or very low magnification optical sights in hunting. The sight picture is very fast to pick up and place on the target, even against the clutter of silhoutted branches etc.. Situation awareness is not lost as you don’t have to ascertain where the picture you are viewing is relative to the target. These sights are ideal for the brush country close range hunting typical of the Eastern and Southern States. Although these sights were primarily developed for the military (exception Aimpoint) the manufacturers realise the importance of the huge US hunting and target shooting market and have created models to address its needs.

Great strides have been made in red dot sight design over recent years. Aimpoint, the leading name in red dot sights recently brought out their Micro H-1 red dot sight. Weighing in at an astonishing 3.7 ounces inclusive of Picatinny mount, this sight has a 4 MoA dot and is parallax free beyond 25 meters. Its partner the NV compatible T-1 is being trialled by the US Army in Afghanistan as a possible replacement for the 10.7 ounce CompM4s (M68 CCO). This will give you an idea how rugged this sight is. This sight gives you the option of carrying a backup for your scope in your pack or even mounting one on top of the scope to provide a close range backup. The Aimpint Micro H-1 is just as at home on shotguns as it is on rifles and even has a following for wildfowling and other wing shooting in Europe. It takes a single CR2032 battery on which it will run continuously for 50,000 hours.

Eotech holographic weapon sights have achieved great popularity with the US military, have been type classified by US SOCOM and are being purchased in large numbers privately by soldiers and airmen. Eotech have deliberately kept focused on the military and law enforcement markets, but hunters are served by a small range of low cost models suited to their needs. Their hunting models run on the readily available AA battery and are fully brightness adjustable to suit all hunting conditions. One big advantage of this system is that even if only a tiny part of the rear sighting window is visible, you can see the aiming pattern and get your shots on the target. Eotech make the Eotech 512.A65 in three versions, the 512.A65/1 (Black finish), 512.A65MO (Mossy Oak Obsession finish) and 512.A65RT (Real Tree APG HD finish) to suit different hunting environments.

Trijicon furnished the sight for the Army’s Advanced Combat Rifle in the early 90s. Despite abandoning the ACR, the Army went on to use the ACOG in large numbers, eventually adopting the TA31F as its M150 Rifle Caliber Optic. The TA44SR-10 is a 1.5X16 unit with a red dot in a circle reticle intended for close range shooting. It is self illuminated via a fiber optic light source by day and tritium at night, therefore needs no batteries and has no electronics to fail. The TA44 comes ready to fit an M16 carry handle but adapters are available for either Weaver or Picatinny rails. This sight has the advantage of retaining situational awareness whilst offering a small amount of additional clarity of the target. 1.5X magnification has a military following – for example the standard carry handle sight on the Steyr AUG rifle. This sight weighs only 4.9 ounces and makes a highly effective wild turkey sight.
