Rcbs Bullet
Reloading .270 Win. I just recently got into reloading. Im using a RCBS Rockchucker Press with RCBS dies.?

I have a couple of differernt reloading manuals and believe that I have followd the directions accurately. I was surprised by how much empty space there was in the case after I charged it. again I reloading for .270 win reusing spend cases that I prepped. The powder I am using is Hodgons H4831SC. I had several people suggest the SC (short Cut) powder for use in the RCBS uniflow measure for its short grain cut and more consistant throws. Is it common and also safe to have the powder moving around alot inside the case, obviously there is alot of empty space in there. Also since the .270 with most bullets does not require a crimp just how secure should the bullet be in the cae. I had one that i was able to push the bullet right into the case.

with modern powder it is perfectly acceptable to have a lot of air space in the cartridge. If it was a black powder load, you would need to use a filler to keep the black powder pushed to the rear of the casrtridge, other wise it would burn incorrectly causing massive overpressure. I love the .270 and have loaded it for over 25 years. Your friend is not off base, long grain powder is difficult to throw accurately in a powder thrower. But, for my hunting loads, I was very very critical on my powder. Since you don’t shoot up a lot of hunting ammo, it is easy to load up 25 or so at a time being meticulous in your powder weight. I actually use a powder thrower like the RCBS to dumpt the powder into the pan, then I weigh each load and make it exactly the same. This would entail throwing the load just a little bit on the light side, then adding powder one grain at a time until it was exact. This does take more time, but I find reloading very relaxing, and, my rifle has been able to put 3 rounds in the same hole at 100 yards for years. As for the crimp, if you can push the bullet back with your hands, you need more crimp. Yes, it does require a roll crimp. Without it, the bullets will be pushed back into the case in the magazine whenever you fire the rifle.Read the instructions for setting up your dies to get the proper crimp.
