Ammunition Reloading: Tumble Brass Cases, or Decap Them First?

I am a newbie reloader looking for advice and have heard the below conflicting information. Perhaps you have advice on this first step in reloading. Tumble the brass cases, or decap them first?

1. “Punch out the primer first, so the tumbling media can clean out the primer pocket. Also, the media can circulate through the inside of the case and clean it as it does the outside. Finally, you don’t want the dirty, leaded primers to go through tumbling because they will contaminate the media. That lead residue from the primers in the media creates a health hazard because of the dust that results when you sift the brass from the contaminated.”

2. “Tumble the brass cases first so they will be clean inside and out before you put them in the press to decap them. Grit and dirt inside or outside the cases will eventually cause unnecessary wear to the dies.”

I don’t decap for the express purpose of cleaning the case. Tumbling media has a nasty habit of sticking inside the flash hole. If you will be sending the case through a decapper again, or you are going to also deburr the flash hole or scrape the primer pocket, then you’ll catch all the cases that get the media stuck in the flash hole.

There is NO reason to purposely clean the primer pocket unless you are a bench rest shooter looking for that extra nanometer in accuracy and your rifle is capable of knowing the difference.

I have rifle cases that have been reloaded half a dozen times. I have some pistol brass that has seen dozens of reloadings. I don’t clean the primer pockets!
