Questions about reloading shotshells?

Ok I’ve been curious and toying over the idea of getting a shotshell reloader I’ve seen a few video which seems easy enough, but I don’t know many brands or what is a good reloader. I’m looking for something to load 3″ shells and maybe 2 3/4 for it to be durable and easy to reload shells quickly — questions are can I load buck shot in all forms and can I load slugs? How much do you save reloading? What are the perks of reloading?— Thanks

Here’s a few food for thought items for you. As far as a brand of re-loader that is strictly a personal choice, cost, capacity, number of stages, primer holder, semi automatic, automatic ones, size; all of these come into play when selecting a shot shell reloading system. I would say start out simple and work your way up.

As for different types of reloads, the sky is the limit so to speak. I reload a lot of reclaimed shot for target practice, dove and quail, and shooting at the house range. For me it’s cheaper to reload 12000 to 14000 shells a year for practice than to buy them. For competition I strictly use factory rounds. As far as slugs, unless your doing several hundred and probably closer to 3 or 4 hundred it just isn’t cost effective to reload slugs. The lead itself is in the 70 to 75% of the cost of factory rounds, add in powder, primer, wads, and cases that will handle slug loads and you can’t justify the cost. If how ever you are wanting a custom load for a slug then you have to weigh the cost versus performance.

Buckshot, again the cost is high, and there is not a good market for reclaimed buckshot. When you add up the cost your margin is less than 15% when you get into a couple of hundred rounds; and that’s with buying sale price components. That leaves steel shot, I never use reclaimed steel shot do to rust and corrosion, reloading it is a pain because of the weight deviations, and I really don’t want to have to open 10 or 20 percent of my shell for a game warden to prove it is steel shot that I reloaded while sitting in a duck or goose blind. Putting steel in shells labled for lead is a no win situation.
For most people who shoot only during the hunting seasons or maybe once a month at the skeet range reloading will take a couple of years to buy back the equipment cost or see a savings. For the folks who shoot 3 or 4 times a week reloading is the best way to go, but you have to shop around in todays market to get a good price on your supplies.
