Reloading Dies

Reloading – Bullet Casting Question – What Sizer Dies Do I Need? What Are Gas Checks?
The Lee Sizer Dies are listed by size, not by caliber. So do I go by bullet width and order accordingly?
What are Gas Checks & how do I know if I need them?
The first thing you want to do is slug your barrel. To do this you will need a soft lead bullet that is just over your bore diameter. It needs to be pure soft lead so that is can squeeze down your bore. Lube this “slug” up well and drive it through your bore from the chamber end and out the muzzle with a brass rod. This will give you the groove diameter of your bore. Size your bullets to this diameter and usually this give you the best accuracy. The key word here is usually. Ballistics is as much art as science so you never can tell what is the best. Testing to find the magic combination is half the fun. If you can’t get the gear up to slug your bore then go by the standard diameter for the cartridge you are loading. Like a .38spl bullet standard is .357 of and inch, .45colt standard is .457 of an inch, 30/06 standard is .308 of an inch, etc.
A gas check is a copper alloy cup that is crimped on to the base of a bullet as it is size. It is used to protect the base of the lead bullet and prevent leading of the bore when they are driven to high velocity. They are usually used in rifle calibers altho they can be used in pistols when the bullets are driven to magnum velocites.
