Choosing A Bedding Compound

Assuming you have a fairly light crisp breaking trigger, nothing can accurize a rifle in a factory stock as much as a good bedding job. Glass bedding will also have the added advantage of making the rifle more dependable and weather resistant. Bedding compound will stop oil and cleaning fluids attacking your precious woodwork and will actually increase the strength of your stock as it is much stronger than any wood. Brownells offer three rifle bedding products of their own, Acraglas, Acraglas Gel and Steel Bed. Each has its own unique characteristics and purposes.

Acraglas was Brownells’ first glass bedding product on the market and has become and industry standard. Acraglas is an epoxy compound that is immensely tough when set, but doesn’t start to cure immediately so that you don’t have to rush your bedding job. You can be quite lazy with your inletting because the compound will fill gaps of any size, resulting in a stock that is stronger than it was before. Acraglas shrinks by less than 0.1% whilst curing ensuring a skin tight fit. Imperfections in the surface of the metal are reproduced exactly. Acraglas is prevented from bonding to the metal by a release agent. Brownells now offer a non flammable release agent which can legally be carried on commercial aircraft, speeding up delivery. Acraglas’ shelf life of greater than five years ensures you can keep some around for when it’s needed. Acraglas is translucent amber in color, but can be dyed other colors to suit different stock materials or finishes. It is not necessary to dye Acraglas with light woods like walnut and cherry. Unlike some cheaper products, Acraglas and other Brownells products do not crumble, disintegrate or sugar out over time.

Brownells customer base soon called for an additional product with some differences from the highly successful original. First they requested a substance that would not run, drip or leach and would spread like butter.  Second, slightly more time was wanted for fine adjustments to the bedding job. Finally, gun enthusiasts wanted to be able to reinforce their bedding with atomized metals, particularly in high stress areas like the recoil lug recess. Brownells now sell aluminium, steel and stainless steel in atomized form. Aluminium is very maleable and easily drilled and worked with woodworking tools. Stainless steel prevents any chance of rust on the surface of the bedding. Brownells met these needs with Acraglas Gel, but made two more improvements. A 1:1 resin to hardener ratio made mixing small quantities a lot easier. They also intruduced nylon derivatives into the epoxy to provide better ‘thin strength’, shock resistance and environmental stability. There is no need to add glass floc to Acraglas Gel. Acraglas Gel is a little more flexible than Acraglas as it is intended that metal reinforcement is used in the high recoil areas.

Some shooters, however, wanted the strongest bedding solution for weapons requiring the greatest accuracy or subjected to extreme rigors of use. Typical users are long range varminters, match rifle shooters, bench rest enthusiasts and the military. Brownells went for atomized stainless steel as the strongest, most environmentally stable reinforcement. They put two and a half times as much atomized stainless steel in the mix as competitor products do. There is actually slightly more metal by weight than epoxy in this new compound, which they christened STEEL BED. Sampes of Brownells STEEL BED were sent to armorers, gunsmiths, custom rifle makers and gun enthusiasts all over the US to try out in the most demanding conditions.  At no time did any STEEL BED installation fail. A 100% warranty demonstrates Brownells’ confidence in this product. The only problem with STEEL BED is that the steel content makes it hard to dye. A good brown and great black can be achieved, but it is best to paint synthetic stocks after bedding. It is possible to disguise STEEL BED by using it in areas that are out of sight, employing Acraglas or Acraglas gel where your work can be seen.

All of these products will greatly benefit the accuracy of your firearm if used correctly. Brownells bedding compounds are very easy to use, especially those that use 1:1 mixing ratios. You will soon find lots of additional uses for these products which will stick almost anything to anything. Brownells even have a letter from someone who used Acraglas to fix a set of false teeth. Brownells offer each of these compounds in packs to suit all uses from a single rifle owned by a once a year deerhunter to small scale rifle production.
