Saiga Rifle

I live in Upstate New York. Where can I buy a semi-auto SAIGA rifle? Can I hunt deer with it?

Most shops can order one, or check www.gunbroker.com and yes. The caliber of that Chinese rifle is 7.62x39mm which sounds obscure, but it is a very common round, you just have to make sure you are buying soft-point bullets because most people are selling FMJ’s for that caliber.

The 7.62x39mm is almost exactly the same round as the 30-30. I know a guy that has been using 30-30 bullets in his for years before I told him the correct caliber to be using.

Now, the clip you use is what is important to check on. Depending on your county, you may have a restriction on how many rounds you can hold. The lowest number of any of the counties if 5 I believe, and you may be in a county that does not specify, and then you can just buy the cheaper 30 round clips. You can also modify the even cheaper ak-47 clips to use in your Saiga with a file. Keep in mind however that the Saiga does not use the same clips as other Kalashnikov of the same caliber (like the ak-47.) It is a different magazine than all other Kalashnikov based actions. Don’t make the same mistake as my father did in expecting to use the same magazines as you can buy for dirt cheap for a ak-47.
