Pliers and cutters, like other hand tools, come in several varieties, a few of which are designed for very specific tasks. Others, however, are more all-purpose in scope. Pliers may double as cutters or strippers or simply be used to twist, grab, pinch or compress fasteners and other materials. Plumbers, mechanics and electricians commonly use both kinds of tools on a daily basis. Pliers are very versatile and, like screwdrivers and hammers, may be used for accomplishing random tasks having nothing to do with their standard purpose.

Pliers and cutters are made of steel or some type of alloy steel with other materials such as chromium or vanadium added to make them stronger and resistant to damage from corrosion. Mechanics’ and plumbers’ pliers are usually all steel, while electricians’ pliers feature insulated rubber grips to reduce conductivity. Pliers can be used to pull, grip, strip, twist, cut, straighten or bend. Screws, pipe, wire, ties of various kinds, nails, machine elements and other materials are among those that can be manipulated by pliers.

Pliers and cutters both work by applying lever force, giving you a mechanical advantage when using them. The tools are simple by design, with the two handles crossing at the pivot point or fulcrum, at which point they become the jaws. The left handle becomes the right jaw and vice versa. To generate the necessary gripping or cutting force, the handles are much longer than the jaws.

Slip joint pliers feature an adjustable pivot point to widen or narrow the grip of the jaws. They are used to grip, twist or pull materials. Also called dikes or wire cutters, diagonal pliers cut but don’t grip. They cut with a wedging rather than a shearing motion thanks to their symmetrical, V-shaped cutting blades. Often called combination pliers, Lineman’s pliers feature a cutter and a grip joint. Needle-nose pliers feature thin, narrow jaws, so they can fit into tight spaces. Electricians’ pliers are specialty tools used to strip wire and cut wire. They often feature a variety of rounded-out sections in their blades to fit around and strip wires of different thicknesses. Other types include pincers and crimp tools used for specific applications.
