The Remington 700 – 50 Years Of Excellence
Ever since its release in 1962, the Remington Model 700 has had unprecedented strength and accuracy right out of the manufacturer. With over fifty variants and large caliber choice, it is no wonder why this rifle is America’s favorite bolt action rifle. as a matter of fact, it is still used by the Marines today in long range training and for real sniping applications out in the field. What is so different about the Remington Model 700 that makes it so special? The answer to that question will be found as we take a closer view at the past of the Model 700.
After the Second World War, about 1948, Remington came out with the model 721/722 series of bolt action rifles. These rifles came to be very popular with civilians and hunters because of the out-of-the-box ruggedness. For the time period, these rifles were also extremely accurate directly from the factory, and several factory made rifles were unable to live up to the Remington standard of performance. In spite of the truly impressive precision and strength, the 721/722 variations had a somewhat short life. This problem is what caused the engineering of the Model 700.
When Remington made the Model 700 in the early 60′s, it was instantly popular. The internals of the 700 were basically the same as the 721/722 models, but there were some mild upgrades to the outside of the rifle. Now with some cool new looks, on top of the standard Remington performance and toughness, the Model 700 was soon a must have in American hunting and shooting. With basic machining tools and rifle knowledge, one can keep a Model 700 working at maximum performance for the rifle’s whole life.
Evidently, the outstanding reputation of the Model 700 caught the attention of the USMC, because in 1969 the US Marine Corps took in the Model 700, calling it the M40. The toughness and precision of the Model 700 fit the USMC with ease, and were more easily blueprinted than the Winchester rifles that the Marines had previously utilized. The wooden bodies were having some problems dealing with the rigorous regime of the USMC, so they upgraded to the McMillan fiberglass body, renaming this rifle the M40A1. This model was in use by USMC shooters for more than 3 decades before again upgrading to the M40A3.
In the present, the Remington Model 700 is manufactured in more than 50 models, stretching from classic wood stocks and internal magazines to modern synthetic stocks and slide-in magazines. It also has a large caliber choice ranging from .17 Remington (coupled with a Nikon Monarch 4-16×42 would be fantastic for varmint hunting), all the way to .458 Winchester Magnum. With more than 3.5 million Model 700’s made from 1962, the Model 700 continues to be one of America’s favorites. One thing is definite; throughout the years, Remington has proceeded to match the great demand for quality and accuracy in its rifles.
