Small Base

Small Base
What are the small letters/numbers at the base of another called?

In equations such as f1 = 2f0, what is the name of the numbers (1 and 0) when they are small and sitting at the base of the f? I’m trying to type them on a mac, so if anyone doesn’t know the name of them but knows the keys to press, I’d be very grateful!
The program I’m using is NeoOffice

They’re called subscripts because they’re written below the normal script. Most of them are not available characters in the commonly used fonts. A common way to notate them in Yahoo! Answers since html is not an option is to use the underscore symbol (_).

Example: log_a(x) = log[little a](x)

I recommend that you use the underscore symbol since you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to make them. :)

The opposite of subscripts are superscripts, characters that are written above the normal script. This typically means exponents in math. Here are 4 available superscripts in the Arial font if you use it: ¹ ² ³ º.

A common way to notate superscripts in Yahoo! Answers since html is not an option is to use the underscore symbol (^).

Example: x^1 = x¹

HOW TO: Make a small (diorama) base
