Modern dark wood (Mango) table – ? should I paint it?

I have a very square, modern dark table that no longer fits into the new scheme of our house, as we’ve moved. I still need something similar size wise and am loath to get rid of this to buy another. The rest of the furniture in this room is now tired pine which I am planning to paint…I’m just not sure about painting something so dark and modern…anyone done this? Advice/suggestions would be gratefully received! Many thanks

Once wood has been varnished/factory lacquered/stained it ought to stay that way. Any attempt to rub it down and paint it is a compromise to good painting practice and it will often be liable to chipping off.

Abrade as much of the old finish off as you are willing to spend the time on, but at least matt every square centimetre to key the surfave and give the new paint something to get hold of.

If you are painting over a varnish type finish which will not let primer soak into it as new wood would, then you need to use a special primer, either prime-it plus or an MDF or cermic primer. It is not essential, just better and you could skip the primer if you were not too bothered. If it more an exposed stain/oil finish then you need to prime with aluminium wood primer, but I don’t recommend it for furniture.

Then you apply one undercoat and one gloss or two satin finishes. You can’t use the emulsion for the walls. Just buy some Dulux paint for wood, Satinwood is a nice finish Oil-based paints (will tell you to wash brushes with white spirit) wil be harder wearing than water-based although your primer will be water based and it doesn’t matter using the two types together.

If you were painting over wood paint, you would not use primer at all, just abrade, undercoat and finish coats

You can rub down the old varnish with a P120 or P80 grade paper and then denib between coats with P180. Use a 4 inch foam/flock roller with a brush.
