Swc Pistol

Is It ok to reload .45 SWC into my Ruger P90 .45 APC.I may have bought the wrong .45 bullet to reload ?

I am new to the reloading world and I bought a 500 pack of ranier .45 SWC. When I got home realized the bullet looked nothing like my RN that I usally use, Should I take these bullets back or actually load them?
I can forsee that lip getting in my slide action every time.

Also can I use CCI Magnum primers left over from loading .223 for my .45 loads? or do I need a large pistol primer?
Alright so I have done some research at the CCI home page in regards to the magnum primers http://www.cci-ammunition.com/education/tech_tips.aspx

• Both CCI “Mil-Spec” rifle primers (Nos. 41 and 34) are MAGNUM primers and intended for use in military-style semi-auto rifles where a slam-fire may occur. Don’t substitute for standard primers without adjusting the load.

I am shooting an M4 Bushmaster, when I get to the range I guess I will find out.

I am a reloading instructor.

First – don’t believe everything (or anything) about reloading from the internet without verifying it is safe. Cross reference everything.

Technically, these SWC will be safe to use – providing they will load jam free. In the old 1911′s we had to open up the throat of the chamber to use these for target work. What you need to do is first buy a factory box of SWC and test them in your P90. If they fire jam free – sure, keep the ones you have. If these factory ones jam – send the box back.

One of the secrets to making SWC load well is to use a taper crimp – just do not overdo it. This is a good thing to have when loading 45acp. For match shooters a taper crimp die is near mandatory. It makes 45acp function better.

You can’t use those primers – first, they are the wrong size, and second they are rifle – rifle primers have a much thicker cup than pistols. You will get misfires, hangfires, and duds when using rifle primers in a pistol.

That, and what the heck are you using Magnum primers in a 223? You should be using standard ones. Magnum ones are a bit hotter and tend to be less accurate unless the cartridge has a large internal volume. In a pinch you can use them if the normal ones are not available, but, it will mess with your load.

Hope this helps!
