Warhammer 40 K Question?
I’m new to the game and I decided to by a small pack to get started. I bought the Tactical Squad Space Marine pack that includes 10 soldiers.
On the box it shows 7 with the boltgun, 1 flamer, 1 missile launcher, and 1 (sgt looking one) that has a chainsword and a storm bolter. But the package includes:
10 boltguns
1 missile launcher
3 storm bolter
1 plasma gun
2 chaiswords
1 vulkan assault pattern
1 flamer
and 2 plama pistols
Q1: Can I customize each anyway I want? Does this affect the status of each individual Marine?
Q2: If so, what would be the best combo for a 10 man squad?
If you’re planning on playing the game, then you’ll need to get yourself a copy of the rulebook and a Space Marines codex, although you can get started really well with the Assault on Black Reach boxed set. This gives you two small armies, the rules and all the dice and other stuff you need to get started playing.
As far as your first squad goes, you have a lot of customization options, which are described in detail in the codex. However, to get you started, tactical squads can come in any size from 5 to 10. Squads of between 5 and 9 allow one space marine to swap his bolter for a flamer, plasmagun or meltagun (the “vulkan assault pattern” you mention). A squad of 10 allows one additional space marine to swap his bolter for a missile launcher, lascannon, heavy bolter, multimelta or plasma cannon.
The sergeant, meanwhile, has a number of other options. He can swap either his bolter or his bolt pistol for any of the following: chainsword, storm bolter, plasma pistol, power sword or power fist.
Each other these choices entails a different points cost that is listed in the codex and, of course, each has different rules and effects on the game, which are listed in the rulebook.
Having said all that, if you want to play the game, assemble them as they appear on the box lid and you won’t go far wrong. Keep all the spare bits as you’ll want them later, either to use on conversions of other miniatures or to trade with other players for bits you do need.
If you’re more interested in just painting and collecting than you are in playing, then assemble them however you want: they’re your minis.
