Tactical Compact

Tactical Compact
Do you think your carry weapon needs a thumb safety?

Just kind of an opinion poll here among shooters. I am not talking about duty weapons, but personal protection pistols. I know many tactical style pistols are DAO without safeties. Some folks claim there is no need for a safety on certain guns.
It seems most newer pocket carry pistols and compacts do not have safeties.

What do you- the carrier think? What do you carry?
Wow, uhmmm, havoc….my condolences.

Yah … in the end I think they probably do. I’ve actually watched pretty experienced shooters coming out of the draw with their finger resting on the trigger. I don’t know whether I’ve ever done it, but I haven’t accidentally lit any off that way, but I have seen it. In fact, it was with a reasonably experienced shooter who had just gotten a trigger job on gun to lighten it up, might have been a Glock, I don’t really remember, and he came out of the holster with his finger on the trigger and as he set the offhand grip and squeezed down lit one off into the dirt not more than 10 feet from himself. It was actually at a competition and I think he got disqualified for it – sure startled the heck out of him.

Does that happen to everyone? Of course not. The point is that increased practice only reduces the probability, not eliminate it. Probably most folks by now have seen the video of the DEA agent at the school who is holstering his Glock and shoots himself. Probably an otherwise competent handler of firearms, but that distraction was enough. That’s really just one sort of thing that can happen.

So, for the most part, certainly anything single action I’m in the camp of needing some kind of safety, particularly if you’ve got tuned triggers and such, other than Single Action Revolvers that generally aren’t carried hammer back. Even DA/SA? Yah, or at least a dec0cker, but a safety is better.

Now, would I carry a DA/SA or a DAO without a safety? Yes, when I have to. Most of the time when I carry I have an H&K P7, I’ve definitely been thinking of moving to something else with an external safety, because the P7 is pretty heavy, but I like it’s features.
