Reflex Sights As Back-ups

Flip up back up iron sights are almost universal on ARs these days, but they do have some limitations. Firstly, they’re not there when you need them – it takes a few seconds to flip them up. This might enable you to get off the critical first shot in a life or death situation. Secondly, those old iron sights effectively take you back to 1900s weapon aiming technology. There are other solutions available, but the best by far is to have a secondary red dot sighting system in place should your primary optic fail. It can also serve in place of a high powered optic should a target appear at close quarters.

One of the most popular options as a secondary red dot is the immensely strong Aimpoint Micro T-1. MIlled or extruded from 6000 series aluminium, this sight is 2.4″ long by 1.6″ high and weighs a mere 3.7 oz. with standard Weaver/Picatinny mount and only 3 oz. on its own. It is parallax free and withstands depths of up to 80 ft. It is powered by a single three volt battery that can keep it running for 50,000 hours (or over five years) on a daylight setting  of 7. There are six night vision and seven daylight settings. The aiming point is a single 4 MoA dot which the makers claim has been proven to be the fastest and most accurate aiming pattern ever devised. Adjustment takes the form of 1/2″ at 100 yard clicks with the adjuster tool made part of the lens cap. The whole unit is mil spec anodized. The US Army has now issued the T-1 in Afghanistan with the 3XMag magnifier in an effort to reduce the soldier’s burden still further in a theatre where soldiers are already resorting to cutting the handles off toothbrushes to save weight. A great range of mounts is available for this sight including both vertical and canted offset units from makers like La Rue Tactical.

Not everyone wears night vision goggles or habitually SCUBA dives with their gun, therefore the manufacturer has come out with the 15 ft rated Aimpoint Micro H-1 model which has 12 day settings, including one extra bright one. The H-1 is the same as the T-1 in all other respects and is the right choice for sports shooting, hunting and pest control applications. The H-1 has a great following in the Nordic countries for waterfowl hunting, moose and wild boar and does not look out of place on a sporting arm.

For those with higher power optics, the US Army recently followed the US Navy’s lead and type classified the L3  Insight Mini Red Dot Sightor MRDS. This 3.5 MoA red dot sight is 1.9″ long, 1.1″ wide and 1.5″ tall and weighs an amazing 0.85 ounces due to its immensely strong polymer chassis. A single CR-1632 lithium battery powers the MRDS which is supplied with an adjuster tool, fixings and a lens cleaning pen. It adjusts in one minute of angle clicks and has four manual brightness settings which can be overidden by a self-regulating mechanism that adapts to ambient light levels. This sight will be issued to those equipped with higher powered optics – initially snipers and designated marksment, but it could very well end up piggybacked on the M150 ACOG if the Army doesn’t switch to the T-1 and 3XMag combination as its standard infantry sight combination. This sight fits any mount designed for the Docter red dot sight and can replace that sight in any application.
