Remington 700 Trigger Upgrades,

Nothing will increase the accuracy of a factory 700 as much as a good trigger  You can choose between polishing the existing mating surfaces, replacing them and other parts with polished and hardened aftermarket replacements or splashing out on a whole new replacement trigger unit from a quality US manufacturer. This article will cover three drop in, or semi drop in replacement trigger units from Timney, Shilen and Arnold Jewell.

Most 700s are probably owned by once a year deerhunters who may not want to purchase a whole new rifle but are not satisfied with the accuracy of their stock 700 ADL or BDL. The unit will need a pull that’s safe for shooting from the shoulder with numb fingers and not break the bank. Timney have focused on providing affordable trigger units that will serve deer hunters well. The Model 510 Remington 700 Timney trigger with safety also fits Remington’s Models 7, 721 and 722 including versions with the ISS bolt lock. The Timney Rem 700 trigger safety does not lock the bolt closed even when the rifle was formerly fitted with a bolt lock. Instead it locks the trigger rather than the sear, keeping it in the position it was when the safety was set to ‘ON’. The Timney Rem 700 unit has a pull in the safe 1.5 to 4 lb range with a crisp let off and a wide (3/8″ (9.5mm) serated trigger that it may require some stock adaptation to fit. Creep and backlash are also adjustable. This is not a stainless unit, but it is made from a solid billet of hardened steel.

Bench rest shooters want a very light, utterly predictable pull in a unit without a safety.  The Remington 700 competition trigger from Shilen is such a model that will fit the 40X rifle and XP100 pistol.  The Shilen Rem 700 trigger is adjustable from 2 – 6 ounches with a crisp, light break. All component parts have their surfaces polished and heat treated for the smoothest possible pull. Lock nuts secure the adjusters from loosening under recoil or vibration. The unit is secured by two pins and requires no gunsmithing. As this is a target unit, no safety is supplied – the unit is ambidextrous in operation.

Hardcore gun enthusiasts specifying a new custom rifle or seriously accurising a factory rifle will not want to compromise.  The Rolls-Royce of trigger units is the Arnold Jewell Remington 700 trigger.  The Jewell 700 trigger is a highly respected unit – so much so that some custom rifle makers will fit nothing else. The entire unit is machined from stainless steel – internals from 440 steel heat treated to RC 52 and the housing of 300 series stainless steel sheet.  The Jewell 700 trigger has a patented mechanism that covers the full spectrum of varmint, bench rest, target, sniping and other precision disciplines with flawless performance and utter reliability. The single stange Jewell Rem 700 trigger has all three adjustments (pull weight, length of pull and overtravel) externally adjustable with no need to take the action out of the stock. Nylon inserts are used to remove the necessity for locking nuts or thread locking compounds. The adjustments simply will not move unless you move them. This Jewell trigger is available for the Remington 700 in two versions.

The RHVR or Remington Hunter Varmint Rifle Trigger can be adjusted from 1.5 to 48 oz and is supplied with a top lever safety and bottom bolt release. It fits Remington 700 and 40x rifles, right-hand actions only.

The Remington Bench Rest Trigger (BR) is a dedicated bench rest version that adjusts between 1.5 and 3 oz. It also fits both the 700 and 40X and can be fitted to either hand of action.
