wanting a low recoiling gun thinking of 25-07 or 257 weatherby mag, will be shooting deer from 50-200 yards?

i want one that can reach out across a field but still be able to shoot something close with considerbly good knockdown power. i have been told that the smaller calibers burn right through
deer at close range with little knockdown power

May I presume that .25-07 is a typo and you intended .25-’06? Or is this a new quarter inch bore based on the .307 Win cartridge?

If you want a mild cartridge that still has a flat trajectory and good killing power on deer at 200 yards, you need to consider the .243 Win, or .250-3000 Savage. Neither of these cartridges are rough on the shoulder and both are good 200 yard deer cartridges, both will also do well on close range deer.

The two cartridges you mentioned are anything but mild. In fact, they are both rip-snorting very high intensity cartridges, and the two most powerful quarter inch bore cartridges around. Ammo for neither is all that common, and the .257 Weatherby cartridges cost as if they were gold plated.

A couple more cartridges you should consider are the .308 Winchester, and the .30-30 WCF. Both are highly effective cartridges, and the .308 can stretch quite a bit past 200 yards with ease, though the .30-30 is on the edge of it’s effective range at 200 yards. Both are chambered in light to medium weight rifles that are handy to use in thick brush country, and they will attain near optimal velocity in barrels around 20″ whereas the .25-’06 and the .257 WM require longer barrels, typically 24″ to 26″ in length. Both the .257 and .25-’06 also require the use of long actions, whereas the .243, .250-3000, and .308 are chambered in compact short actions, and the .30-30 is in a handy little lever-action carbine.

BTW, close in effectiveness is dependent on bullet choice. If you pick a bullet that is designed to open at the velocities remaining at long range, it is liable to blow up, leaving a nasty shallow wound at close range. Likewise if you choose a bullet that will hold together at high close in velocities, it might not expand at the reduced velocities of long range, resulting in a through and through caliber sized wound.

It is my opinion that cartridges like the .25-’06 and .257 WM are at their best when long range shots will be the norm, not the exception. Both would make fine beanfield rifles, but they are not my idea of a good woods rifle.
